Publisher's Description:
PowerDesk - PowerDesk 6 free file management and zip utility for the PC desktop is an excellent replacement for Windows Explorer. PowerDesk is a file manager that has all the features of Windows Explorer; it encrypts and decrypts, zips, unzips and password protects, views numerous file types, and provides quick access to popular applications and e-mails. The powerful Power Desk search tool makes it easy to find files. PowerDesk Utilities' two pane interface is very similar to Windows Explorer. The Quicklaunch comes with shortcuts to programs like Internet Explorer, Registry Editor, Notepad and Paint. This toolbar can also be customized to launch any other app you want. Files can be permanently deleted or sent to the recycle bin with a click of the trash and recycle icons. Files can be zipped and unzipped using the right-click context menu. And files can be encrypted and decrypted with a few simple steps. PowerDesk decodes email messages, allows you to preview files in a file viewer and finds music files based on MP3 tag information. PowerDesk is the ultimate PC desktop utility and it’s free! List of Changes:Version 6.013 from 2005-09-01

This was the last fully reliable version of this excellent program. The next two "upgrades" actually made the program worse, and were a completely shameless and criminal ripoff. That said, PowerDesk is still the best file management program available for the money. I have tried most of the others, and all trip up in some way by comparison. The program is easy to learn and use, "intuitive," fairly easy to customize in reasonable ways, and quickly becomes a vital part of daily computer life.

I have been using Power Desk 6.013 for a while now and am very pleased with it. My only negative comment is that every now and again it will not open. and I am forced to use Windows Explorer. Is there a fix for this. Many thanks Philip Bassett

Great program. I own powerdesk 8 but the download and all the registration material was lost on computer crash. So I'm using the free product for now. I have used the programs for years and appreciate their utility. LWM

I've used Powerdesk for about 10 years(started with PD4Free), i think its the ONLY File manager, i can't live without it, i went out and brought System utilities, thinking that PD was still apart of the bundle... It wasn't, very disappointing(it cost me $99 in Australia!), so i've been living without PD for about 3 years( i did try the free version, but it didn't work with Vi$ta)PD, for me was always rock solid, so i thought that was strange... Anyway, i'm going to try PD6.013,and hope that it works with Vi$ta(i'm soon to move to Win7 Ultimate, hope it works on that, crosses fingers)

Well - this review is not about version 6 because I ended up purchasing version 8 which is proving to be excellent. I'm a long time user of V5 and I was distressed when it was broken after XP updates. However, all is well with the world again after installing V.8. (I find windows extremely clumsy without Powerdesk).

I have been using PowerDesk for over 10 years on several computers. I think it is a fantastic program, far better then MS Windows Explorer or Total Commander. However : since I bought twice a Pro license in the past, I was somewhat surprised that there is now a free promotional offer.

Powerdesk is a great file transfering program, however, if you have to reinstall it on either a rebuilt or newer system it will not let you use it, unless you get in touch with the programs provider....likely to repurchase the licence.
I now don't use the program.

I've used PowerDesk since version 2 and hate using a computer without it. It does just what you expect every time (unlike Windows Explorer). I especially like the dual panes & Layout Manager which saves them in any configuration for instant recall. You can select and sort files instantly in any view. Synchronize feature is amazing for backups, etc. I also appreciate the FTP transfer, viewer pane (although it doesn't work for the ribbon-MS office programs), file association and a host of other things you can do without leaving the program.

Hi Download and installation went without a hitch. However under Win7 Ultimate, when right mouse clicked on a file caused the program to stop/close. this happened several times and in the end became unusable. Also when clicking on win updates in Win 7 caused Powerdesk to open instead of win update.
Under Win XP was fine and as normal. Have uninstalled on Win 7 but sill using under Win XP. Shame because the program is excellent I have used it for some years under Win XP/Wn2000

I had a problem with Powerdesk 5 & 6 on four Windows XP computers. When you right click on a directory to delete it an error occurred and Powerdesk would shut down. This would happen also with Windows Explorer if Powerdesk was installed on the system. Removed Powerdesk 5 or 6 and the problem was gone. I downloaded the new copy of Powerdesk 6 to see if that would solve the problem. It didn't. I purchased Powerdesk 8 and everything is fine. Powerdesk has been a favorite of mine since the early '90's.

I've been using Power Desk in one version for many years now. I started with EZ file managing using an application called X-Tree, X-Tree Gold, and graduated to PD. I could not navigate properly using the archaic windows explorer. I am disappointed with PD-V6 (and 6013) for one irritating reason. Using it with Win7 (home ver), after closing the Appl, I have to go into Task Mgr to close files from PD that refuseto close when the appl closes. And the whole prog works too well for me to spend another 30-40$ (which I really can't afford anyway)for the v-7 or v-8. I really think that you should allow free updates to those version for long time, registered users. Also, not to limit use to 1 cpu. I use 3 cpu's in my house alone.

I've been using PowerDesk for almost a decade, starting with v. 4. I'd recently purchased PD 8 for my Windows 7 machine, but wanted a modest upgrade to my WinXP machine. PowerDesk 6 fits the bill perfectly! I do nearly all my file management through it. I am at a loss when I find myself on a computer that doesn't have PowerDesk installed on it. Great product!

Works the same as ver 7 that I bought.ie on Win XP it loads ONCE per boot. What I mean is that if I close it in a session and then try to open it again it doesn't show up. It is there in the background but I cannot see it and I cannot use it until I reboot and it prevents Windows from shutting down. I told powerdesk about this a few years ago but as with all software developers I was ignored. They know best.

Does well in correctly returning to the same directory, but has problems at times shutting down. Sometimes it remains active even though it says it has shut down, and must be killed off via Windows Task Manager -- otherwise, file locks can occur.

I have been using Powerdesk Pro for a couple of years. I even bought a license for a friend. I find it irritating to be on a computer without it being available. I feel very strongly about managing the filing system the way I like it. The Powerdesk Pro is the easiest way to do so.

I used powerdesk pro 6 for a long time with complete satisfaction. After a computer crash I was forced to reload and could only install version 7 which I HAD TO PAY FOR. This did not work as it caused a blank screen every time it was invoked and when it was closed. A number of requests for help to Avonquest did get any useful response. DONT BUY BEFORE YOU TRY A FREE PERIOD.

A fine software addition to get hold of the several files, and see all contents in one go and do the needful, however, inclusion of accessing those difficult files to convert to commonly used format, registry check and correction facility, optimisation of the hard disc etc. would have been of great help to user. An advisory &search for corrective and free down loads of useful software addtions to the site is suggested. Thanks & Regarsd, prakashkarra@hotmail.com

Still the best for windows
I've been using PowerDesk for years now. I think my first purchase of a Pro version was when 6 first came out. And, now I've bought 7 too -- though only because of Vista/Win7. BTW, they really need to work the bugs out of 7.!
Version 6 works great for xp and previous OS's and it's still my choice, hands down. I never use their preview so the lack of that in the free version doesn't bother me in the least. I'm always using the split-screen mode to explore/move or copy between folders, drives and back.n.forth to usb sticks.
Coupling PowerDesk and IZArc for archive handling you really can't ask for more when it comes to raw file handling. I just hope that the current owners of the software "AvanQuest", a french company I think, get some really good programmers to breath the life into the new version needed for the post-XP windows versions.
The one feature that the paid version has which isn't included in the free version is it's FTP features but, there are several good clients for that so, give PowerDesk 6 a try if you're using XP or prior systems. I do customize the toolbar so that I can get rid of the large button controls which are installed in the beginning.
Anyway, it's definitely my favourite for windows. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised if you spend some time getting it customised for your needs at just how quick it can make file management.
OH..!.. As a bonus, you also get a great FileFinder program even with the free version and, can have via right-click easy access to move to and copy to as PowerDesk sub-items.

Good product, but could use some changes.
After reading all the glowing reports about PowerDesk, I decided to try it myself. I downloaded ver 6 free and took it through its paces.
The product is good, alot better than Windows Explorer in many ways. The paid features would also seem to give it fantastic abilities.
The deal breaker for me, and maybe it can be resolved in some setup screen, is the display of networked drives. PowerDesk displays networked folders with the full description of the network location, instead of just their names. This makes traversing complicated network trees unmanagable. For the home user this issue would not probably even come up, but for a small business or networked environment, it rules out use of the software. Function over form.
You have a great product, and I applaud your giving away older versions to the computing community. You also may make more sales by affiliating with TechSoup really getting some non-profit exposure.
I'll be periodically checking on your newer version to see if you've resolved this issue. Until this thanks for a great product.

PowerDesk the Champion
I have been using PD (5) free version for several years. Now, with the "advent" of version 7 the price of version 6 was dramatically reduced and so I could afford to pay it. Even the limited-capability free version was way better than any other file manager I know and I did try many. But this one with its built-in ftp, file viewing, versatile customization and lots of other capabilities is a must-have. Very inexpensive now.

Sometimes won`t load...
I love working with PowerDesk, much more robust than Explorer, but I have had the same single complaint with running it on both XP and Vista. When I first boot the machine PD will load fine, but if I close it and later try to load it, often (not all the time) simply will not load. But when I go to shut down my computer, it will show it was trying to load.

Requested feedback
It was OK, and has better features than the standard Windows Explorer, but there are other free file managers that offer similar functionality, such as FreeCommander and ExplorerXP.
The zip/unzip feature is useful, but again not exclusive.
I am not sure that this program solves problems, but it is another useful tool.

Microsoft Windows Vista???
I have been using PowerDesk Pro 4 for a number of years (Windows 98 and XP). The only added feature in "Pro" that I use is "File Viewer".
I never use Windows Explorer on my Windows XP desk top.
My laptop is Vista. PowerDesk 6 works fine until it just disappears! Double click on icon, hour glass; nothing. Restart and it works again!
I will buy it when it works.

Powerdesk - still needs something
I used Powerdesk 4.0 for quite some time until I found Total Commander, which I believe to be the most complete file manager I've ever used. Powerdesk 6 does not have the ease of use, user interface that makes it intuative.
Thanks for allowing me to try it out.
